Marrakech to Merzouga: distance, route and how many days you need

Marrakech to Merzouga: camel caravan in the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset
In short: Marrakech to Merzouga is roughly 560 km, or 9–10 hours of driving across the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Ouarzazate, the Dadès Valley and the Todra Gorge. Because of that distance, 3 days is the realistic minimum, and 4 days gives a far more relaxed pace with fewer hours in the car.

Most travellers look at a map of Morocco and assume the Sahara is a quick hop from Marrakech. It is not. The trip from Marrakech to Merzouga crosses the whole High Atlas and a long stretch of pre-Saharan valleys before the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon.

This guide explains the real distance, the classic route and its best stops, and how to decide between a 3-day and a 4-day desert trip. It is written by our Marrakech team, who drive this road every week.

How far is Merzouga from Marrakech?

Merzouga is a small village on the western edge of Erg Chebbi, the most famous sand sea in Morocco. By road it sits about 560 km from Marrakech. Pure driving time is around 9–10 hours, without photo stops, lunch or a walk in a gorge. Nobody sensible does it in one go.

The road is paved all the way and in good condition, but it climbs to 2,260 m at the Tizi n'Tichka pass, winds through mountain hairpins and passes through many villages with speed limits. Averages are therefore low, which is why we always split the journey over at least two driving days.

The classic route from Marrakech to the Sahara

There is essentially one sensible road east, and it happens to be one of the most scenic drives in North Africa. Here is the order in which you meet the highlights:

  1. Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) – the road over the High Atlas, with Berber villages clinging to the slopes and snow on the peaks in winter.
  2. Aït Ben Haddou – a fortified earthen village (ksar) listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, and a favourite film set.
  3. Ouarzazate – the "door of the desert", home to film studios and the Taourirt kasbah.
  4. Dadès Valley – the "valley of a thousand kasbahs", with rose fields around Kelaat M'Gouna and dramatic rock formations.
  5. Todra Gorge – a narrow canyon with walls around 300 m high, best explored on foot.
  6. Merzouga and Erg Chebbi – the dunes, the camel ride at sunset and a night in a desert camp.
Aït Ben Haddou ksar on the road from Marrakech to Merzouga
Aït Ben Haddou is the first big stop after crossing the High Atlas.

On the way back, most itineraries return through the Draa Valley or straight via Ouarzazate, so you see a slightly different landscape rather than repeating every kilometre.

3 days or 4 days: which Merzouga trip should you choose?

Because of the distance, a "1-day" or "2-day" Merzouga trip from Marrakech does not exist in any comfortable form. Your real choice is between 3 and 4 days (or more if you continue to Fes).

  • 3 days, round trip – two long driving days (around 8–9 hours each with stops) and one night in the dunes. Works if you are short on time.
  • 3 days, Marrakech to Fes – you cross the desert and finish in Fes instead of driving back. Our 3-day Marrakech to Fes desert route is the most efficient way to combine both cities.
  • 4 days, round trip – the sweet spot. A night in the Dadès Valley, time to walk in the Todra Gorge, a night in the dunes and a calmer return. See our 4-day Sahara journey from Marrakech to Merzouga.
  • 5 days or more – add Skoura, an extra desert night or a luxury camp, like our 5-day private Merzouga desert escape.

How to get from Marrakech to Merzouga: your options

Private tour with a driver

This is the most popular option and the one we run. You have your own vehicle and driver, choose your stops and set the pace. Prices for our 4-day trip start from about €325 per person based on a group of 7; smaller groups pay a little more per person.

Shared group tour

Cheaper, but with fixed stops, a full minibus and less flexibility. Our comparison of private and group tours in Morocco explains the trade-offs.

Self-drive or bus

Renting a car is possible, but the mountain road, night-time livestock and the last kilometres to camp make it tiring. Buses run to Rissani and Merzouga, but they take most of a day and do not stop at the sights.

Step by step: planning your desert trip

  1. Decide how many days you can give the desert (3 minimum, 4 recommended).
  2. Choose round trip from Marrakech or a one-way crossing to Fes.
  3. Pick your season – see our guide to the best time to visit the Sahara in Morocco.
  4. Choose your camp level: standard or luxury tents with private bathrooms.
  5. Request a free quote; we confirm the itinerary and pick-up from your riad or hotel.

What is the Marrakech to Merzouga drive actually like?

Expect hairpin bends on the Tichka, plenty of photo stops, mint tea breaks and long straight roads after Tinghir where the landscape turns stony and flat. Air-conditioned vehicles make summer bearable; in winter, mornings on the pass can be icy. Motion-sensitive travellers should sit in front and take something for travel sickness on the mountain section.

When you arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon, the driver hands you over to the camel team. The ride into the dunes takes about an hour, timed for sunset, and you reach camp for dinner, music and a sky full of stars.

Where do you sleep between Marrakech and Merzouga?

On a 4-day round trip the usual pattern is simple: night one in the Dadès Valley or the Todra Gorge area, night two in a camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes, and night three in Ouarzazate or the Draa Valley before returning to Marrakech. On a 3-day trip you skip one of the valley nights, which is exactly why the driving days feel longer.

Accommodation along the route is mostly family-run guesthouses and kasbah-style hotels built in rammed earth, with rooftop terraces and tagine dinners. They are simple but characterful; heating in winter and air conditioning in summer vary, so ask what is included when you book. In the dunes, you choose between a standard camp with shared facilities and a luxury camp with private bathrooms in each tent, which we describe in our guide to Sahara desert camps in Morocco.

What is usually included in a Merzouga desert tour?

Inclusions vary between operators, so compare carefully. On our private trips, the price typically covers:

  • Pick-up and drop-off at your riad or hotel in Marrakech.
  • A private air-conditioned vehicle and a licensed driver who speaks English, French or Spanish.
  • Accommodation with dinner and breakfast along the route.
  • The camel ride into the dunes and the night in a desert camp.

Lunches, drinks, entrance fees to sites such as the kasbahs, local guides in Aït Ben Haddou or the Todra Gorge, and tips are usually not included. Budget a little cash in dirhams for these.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do Marrakech to Merzouga in one day?

Technically the drive is 9–10 hours, but doing it in a single day leaves no time for Aït Ben Haddou, the Todra Gorge or the camel ride at sunset, and you would arrive exhausted. We always split it over at least two driving days, which is why 3 days is the realistic minimum for a Merzouga trip from Marrakech.

Is Merzouga better than Zagora for a desert trip from Marrakech?

Zagora is closer (one long day each way), but its dunes are small. Merzouga sits next to Erg Chebbi, where dunes are far higher and the scenery is the classic Sahara image. If you have at least three days, Merzouga is usually the better choice; with only two days, Zagora is the compromise.

Is the road from Marrakech to Merzouga safe?

Yes, the road is paved all the way and well travelled by tourists and locals. The main difficulties are the bends on the Tizi n'Tichka pass and occasional snow or fog in winter. A professional local driver who knows the road removes most of the stress.

How much does a private Marrakech to Merzouga tour cost?

Our 4-day private Sahara journey starts from about €325 per person based on 7 travellers, with smaller groups paying a little more per person. The price depends on group size, season and the camp category. Requesting a quote is free and we reply within a few hours.
